We live in a world in which ever more information systems are drawing upon Artificial Intelligence (AI), influencing different aspects of our everyday life. The algorithm-focused view on the remarkable progress of these technologies opened new opportunities for empowering users but also posed threats such as bias, trust, and privacy, just to name a few.

Successful AI strengthens the tie to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) by creating a demand for new and better interaction. Usable AI might be realized by teams composed of HCI researchers employing AI techniques and AI researchers applying HCI methodologies, and not only!

To face this challenge, new research topics emerged for providing new design and engineering methodologies considering users and the AI as a whole (e.g., Human-Centered AI), or pushing the borders between HCI and AI, such as Human-Based Computation (HBC) and Augmented Intelligence, i.e., problems in which humans and machines work together towards solving a common goal, either where the machine is assisted by humans (HBC) or the humans are assisted by the machines (Augmented Intelligence).

Besides traditional HCI topics, CHItaly 2023 theme is to host debates on the intersection of HCI and AI as an emerging field of research, devoted mostly to Intelligent User Interfaces, i.e., interfaces developed using the approaches from HCI and the tools from AI. To reach this aim, besides consolidated HCI contributions, we solicit research on methods, approaches, and systems relating the Human and the AI, innovative AI-based interfaces and interactions empowering humans, and experiences in good and bad practices in applying AI to the interaction

So far, CHItaly has physically hosted HCI scholars working in the Mediterranean and other European countries.

We welcome research contributions in the form of either long or short research papers.

Long papers present original and substantially new research in HCI. Research procedures and technical aspects are presented in sufficient detail so as to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility; results are communicated according to scholarly standards, and implications of the contributions/findings for HCI have to be explicitly discussed.

Short papers present original and provocative research or novel applications in HCI. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance for HCI rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, or research studies.

All paper manuscripts undergo a selective review process. Accepted papers are invited for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings, published in the ACM Digital Library within the International Conference Proceedings Series. Therefore, authors of the accepted papers are invited to submit a camera-ready version in a suitable ACM format for proceedings before the conference. Authors of top-quality papers are invited, through an open call, to submit extended versions to special issues in international highly ranked journals.

Besides the special theme of CHItaly 2023, the conference is interested in traditional topics in HCI (e.g., HCI theories, concepts and methods; Interaction technologies and tools; Collaborative and social computing and HCI) and topics for the advancement of HCI (e.g., Technology enhanced learning and HCI; Values and ethics in HCI; Smart things, smart ambients or smart cities and HCI; Interaction in eXtended Reality, Physical computing, making or digital fabrication and HCI; Recommendation, personalisation or adaptation and HCI). All paper manuscripts must be in English. All manuscripts must be anonymous, avoiding to include information (authorship, acknowledgements, name of application or software or project) suggestive of the identity of the authors; it will be added later, to the camera ready versions, in case of acceptance. All manuscripts are subject to a double-blind review process by members of the Program Committee, and each manuscript will receive three reviews.
All authors must submit manuscripts for review using the ACM single column submission template. The recommended lengths are:

• at most 9,000 words for long papers (excluding references),
• at most 5,000 words for short papers (excluding reference).

Manuscripts, in PDF format, must be uploaded via Easy Chair.

Research transparency is very important in a CHItaly paper. It allows reviewers to understand and assess submitted work, and it allows members of the research community to continue a research line. As such, transparency is taken into account very seriously in the review process.
Therefore, meanwhile guaranteeing anonymity, we expect authors to leave citations to their previous work in line with CHI 2023 guidelines.
Last but not least, all authors are expected to conform to the ACM ethics code.
